Quick summary

Sexual dysfunction covers erection difficulty, low desire, arousal and sensitivity changes and discomfort, in men and in women. Care at both offices is non-surgical and drug-free. It starts with an honest assessment, then acoustic wave therapy using GAINSWave and Omniwave, with pelvic floor work added where it applies. Nothing is prescribed or injected here, and the consultation is private.

Understanding sexual dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction means a persistent difficulty with desire, arousal, erection, sensitivity, comfort or satisfaction that bothers you. In men it most often appears as erection difficulty. In women it more often appears as reduced arousal, reduced sensitivity or discomfort. Both are common and both deserve examination.

This is mostly about blood vessels and nerves, in men and in women.

There is a mental side too, and it is real. Performance anxiety feeds itself, and a few bad experiences build a pattern that outlasts whatever started it.

Medication, alcohol, poor sleep and long-term stress all contribute. What is causing yours decides whether anything offered here is likely to help, which is why we examine rather than assume.

How it works

  1. Blood arrives

Arousal depends on blood arriving where it is needed.

  2. The vessels widen

That depends on the small vessels being able to widen.

  3. The nerves carry the signal

It also depends on the nerves carrying the signal to do it. Anything that narrows those small vessels or damages those small nerves shows up here eventually.

Why is this so hard to bring up?

Most people find this hard to search for and harder to raise at a rushed appointment. Almost everybody who comes here waited longer than they needed to.

Some have a prescription that works some of the time and does not feel like an answer. Some cannot take one. Some were told it is age and left with that.

What does an examination change?

Very few people have had anybody sit down and examine why it is happening. Sexual symptoms often show up before the health problem causing them shows up anywhere else, so examining is worth the trouble.

Dr. Justin Bergin has been in practice for 22 years and treats this as a medical problem to be examined.

Where does the conversation happen?

Consultations are private and unhurried, at the Lakeland office on South Florida Avenue and at the Lady Lake office serving The Villages.

Nobody here will promise you a result.

Independent background: Erectile Dysfunction, Urology Care Foundation.

Symptoms

Most people recognize their own version somewhere in this list. Each one maps to a specific finding the examination checks for.

  • Difficulty getting or keeping an erection
  • Erections that are less firm than they were
  • Reduced desire or interest
  • Reduced arousal or sensitivity
  • Discomfort or dryness during intimacy
  • Difficulty reaching orgasm
  • Symptoms that began gradually over months
  • Loss of confidence about intimacy
  • Changes that started alongside a health diagnosis

Common causes

Reduced blood flow in small vessels

Narrowed or stiffened small arteries limit how much blood arrives and how quickly. This is the most common physical mechanism behind erection difficulty, and it is what acoustic wave therapy is aimed at.

Diabetes and blood sugar damage

Sustained high blood glucose damages both small blood vessels and small nerves. Sexual and bladder symptoms are recognized consequences, which is why blood sugar belongs in this conversation.

Cardiovascular and metabolic disease

High blood pressure, high cholesterol and carrying extra weight all affect the same vessels. Symptoms here often precede a cardiac diagnosis by years, which is a reason to get examined.

Pelvic floor weakness or overactivity

The pelvic floor participates in arousal, continence and sensation in both sexes. It can be too weak and it can also be too tight, and those require different work, so it is assessed rather than assumed.

Hormonal change, medication and lifestyle

Hormonal change affects desire, arousal and comfort, particularly after menopause. Several medication classes, heavy alcohol use, poor sleep and stress contribute. Hormone testing and treatment are not offered here.

How we treat sexual dysfunction in Lakeland and The Villages

Care is non-surgical and drug-free, and acoustic wave therapy is the main treatment. It is delivered with GAINSWave for sexual wellness, and with the Omniwave platform the practice also uses on joints and tendons. Pelvic floor work is added where the assessment points there. Nothing is prescribed and nothing is injected.

Acoustic wave therapy with GAINSWave

GAINSWave is the acoustic wave protocol used for men's and women's sexual wellness. Low-intensity sound waves are applied to the treatment area to support blood flow in the small vessels.

It is drug-free, there is no needle and no downtime, and ChiroMed is an approved GAINSWave provider. No outcome is guaranteed and candidacy is assessed first.

the sexual wellness program built around GAINSWave acoustic wave therapy

Omniwave, the machine used for the same treatment on joints

Omniwave is the same acoustic wave technology the practice uses on tendons, knees and shoulders, applied here to a different area. The physics is identical and has been used in joint and tendon medicine for years.

the same Omniwave acoustic wave platform used on joints and tendons

Pelvic floor recovery when the pelvic floor is part of it

For men after prostate surgery and for women managing change after menopause, the pelvic floor often sits underneath both the sexual and the bladder symptoms.

Assessment decides whether it needs strengthening, releasing or retraining. Those are three different jobs.

Treatment at our Lakeland office, and also at:

What recovery usually looks like

Private consultation and assessment Your first visit

A full history covering health conditions, medication, sleep, activity and how the symptoms developed, in a private room with the door shut.

You are told honestly whether this is likely to be something acoustic wave therapy can help.

Through the protocol Across the course

Sessions are delivered in the office, you stay dressed apart from the treatment area, and there is no recovery time. Change is usually gradual rather than sudden.

Maintenance, and treating the cause Longer term

If the cause is blood sugar or circulation, treating only the symptom buys you time and nothing more. Any ongoing plan is discussed openly, including the option of stopping.

When to seek care sooner

What to try at home first: work on sleep, alcohol and activity before anything else, because all three affect circulation directly.

Ask your physician or pharmacist whether any of your medications are known to affect sexual function. Several common ones are, and a change is sometimes possible.

If you smoke, nothing else you do here will matter as much as stopping. Get your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checked if you have not recently.

If you have a known heart condition and have not discussed sexual activity with your cardiologist, do that first.

Some symptoms need a physician right away. Chest pain or breathlessness when you exert yourself needs medical care first, because erection problems can be an early sign of a circulation problem.

So does a change that came on suddenly or after an injury. So does pain during intimacy, a new curve or lump, or blood in the urine or semen.

Cost, insurance and financing

Cost depends on what the assessment finds, on how many sessions are involved, and on whether pelvic floor work is part of it. We set it out at the consultation.

The one published price

Consultation, Exam, X-Rays (If Needed) & Report of Findings: Only $47

What affects the cost

  • What the assessment finds and how long symptoms have been present
  • How many sessions the protocol involves
  • Whether pelvic floor work is combined with it

What a course includes

  • A private consultation and assessment
  • A clear explanation of what is proposed and what it does not promise
  • An honest recommendation against treatment where it is unlikely to help

Payment:

Sexual wellness care is self-pay. Coverage varies by carrier, and some services may only qualify as cash-pay. Medicare coverage varies by plan and by service. Our front desk will tell you exactly what applies before you commit to anything.

Payment plans are available for self-pay care. New patients start with a consultation, exam, x-rays if needed and report of findings for only $47.

How do blood sugar and circulation cause this?

Erection difficulty and prediabetes often turn up together, and some men arriving here are already managing type 2 diabetes. That is why the assessment asks about blood sugar.

High blood glucose damages small blood vessels and small nerves. Those are exactly the structures arousal depends on.

Why are the feet and the bladder involved too?

The same damage causes numbness in the feet and bladder symptoms in the pelvis. All three often turn up in the same person, because they share one cause.

It runs the other way too. These vessels are small, so they are affected early, and symptoms here can be the first sign of a circulation or blood sugar problem.

The Urology Care Foundation is direct that erectile dysfunction can be a warning sign of cardiovascular disease.

What changes with age, and what does not

Erections change with age. They take longer to arrive, they may need direct stimulation, they can be less firm, and the recovery time between them lengthens.

All of that is ordinary, and none of it means intimacy is finished.

When is a change worth examining?

A steady loss to the point where an erection cannot be achieved at all is not simply age. Nor is a sudden change.

That is usually a blood flow problem and it is worth examining, whatever decade you are in.

Men in their seventies and eighties are assessed here routinely. The conversation is the same one we have with a fifty year old: what is causing it, what can be changed, and what is realistic.

Desire and comfort change with age for women too, and the same applies.

Dr. Justin Bergin, DC conducts these consultations personally and privately. If bladder leakage is also part of it, start from the wider set of conditions handled in Lakeland and Lady Lake.

Who you would be seeing

How does he approach this?

Dr. Justin Bergin, DC is 22 years into practice. He treats this the way he treats a knee or a disc: examine, explain, and be honest about what is likely.

When will he send you somewhere else?

He will tell you when your symptoms point to something that needs a physician or a urologist instead.

He will also tell you when acoustic wave therapy is unlikely to be worth your money.

How private is the consultation?

Consultations are held privately and nothing is discussed at a front desk.

Sexual Dysfunction in recent research

These sources are independent of this practice and none of them endorses it. They are listed so the reasoning behind the care can be checked rather than taken on trust.

  1. Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 2024

The federal reference on the vascular, hormonal and medication-related causes of erectile dysfunction, and on the medical workup it warrants.

  2. Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Guideline

The urology specialty guideline setting out evaluation and treatment options, including the cardiovascular assessment that should follow a new diagnosis.

Options compared, honestly

This is treated very differently depending on who you walk in to see. Here is the full set, including the options this practice does not provide.

Option What it isTypically considered whenInvasive?Offered at ChiroMed?
GAINSWave acoustic wave therapy Our approach Low-intensity sound waves applied to support small-vessel blood flow You want a drug-free option, or medication is unsuitable or disappointingNoYes
Pelvic floor recovery Assessment and retraining of the pelvic floor muscles Symptoms follow prostate surgery, childbirth or menopauseNoYes
Metabolic and vascular assessment Looking at blood sugar, weight and circulation as contributing factors Symptoms began gradually and other risk factors are presentNoYes
Oral PDE5 inhibitors Prescription tablets taken before intimacy to support an erection A physician has assessed you and considers medication appropriateNoNot performed here. We do not prescribe. Appropriate when a physician judges medication suitable and safe with your other prescriptions.
Penile injection therapy Medication injected directly before intimacy, prescribed and taught by a physician Oral options have failed or cannot be usedMinimallyNot performed here. Appropriate when oral medication has not worked and a urologist recommends it.
Penile implant surgery A surgically placed device inside the penis Nothing else has worked and the problem is severe and permanentYesNot performed here. Appropriate when all conservative and medical options have been exhausted and a urologist recommends it.
Urology referral Specialist medical assessment of the urinary and reproductive system There is pain, curvature, blood, prostate history or a suspected hormonal causeVariesNot performed here, and we will point you there. Appropriate whenever the examination suggests a structural, hormonal or prostate cause.

Several of these work and several are reasonable things to do. Medication manages one episode. Acoustic wave therapy is aimed at the blood supply itself. Many people use more than one, and there is no single right answer for everybody.

What kind of doctor should I see for erectile dysfunction?

Start with whoever can assess the cause. A primary care physician can check blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. A urologist handles structural, prostate and hormonal questions.

We handle the non-surgical, drug-free part, and we refer you on when the examination points somewhere else.

the clinic team
Can a 75 year old man get hard?

Yes, commonly. Erections change with age. They can take longer to develop and may be less firm, and that is normal.

Being unable to get one at all is not simply age. It is usually a blood flow problem and it is worth examining. Age alone does not rule a man out of an assessment, and men in their seventies and eighties are seen here for this.

the clinic team
Does ED mean something is wrong with my heart or my blood sugar?

It can, and that is a reason to get checked rather than to panic. The same small vessels that supply an erection are affected early by diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Symptoms here sometimes arrive before anything else does. Ask your physician for the basic bloodwork.

the clinic team
How to stay hard without Viagra?

The non-drug options are the ordinary ones, plus one that uses a device. Sleep, alcohol, activity, weight and blood pressure all matter, and people underestimate all five.

Acoustic wave therapy targets the blood supply itself rather than a single episode. Nothing here is prescribed, and no approach works for everyone.

the clinic team
Is ChiroMed an approved GAINSWave provider?

Yes. GAINSWave is the acoustic wave protocol used for men's and women's sexual wellness at both offices.

The Omniwave platform behind it is the same acoustic technology the practice uses on joints and tendons. Whether you are a candidate is assessed at the consultation, before any session is booked.

the clinic team
Is this covered by insurance?

Generally no. Sexual wellness care is self-pay. Medicare coverage varies by plan and by service, so ask our front desk. They will tell you what applies to your situation before you commit to anything.
