Chiropractic Care at ChiroMed

Have you already been told to rest and take something?

You have been to the walk-in clinic. You have been handed a muscle relaxant and told to rest.

Maybe someone took a film, said it looked fine, and sent you home still hurting. None of that answers the question you actually came in with: why does this keep happening?

Where does chiropractic care fit in this practice?

It is the foundation of everything done here. Dr. Justin Bergin, DC has spent 22 years working out what drives a person's pain rather than quieting it for a week at a time.

It is also the entry point to the full range of chiropractic services offered here. If it is the wrong tool for your case, you will hear that at the first visit.

It is one of the treatments offered through our chiropractic services.

What chiropractic care actually does

Chiropractic care is hands-on treatment of the spinal joints and the muscles around them, delivered by a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic. A controlled force is applied to a joint that is not moving well. That restores motion, settles irritation on nearby nerves, and takes load off the tissue that hurts.

Spines differ and so do patients, so the technique is chosen for the person on the table.

Manual adjusting is a precise, quick, low-amplitude thrust delivered by hand into a specific segment. It is what most people picture, and what most working-age patients with a stiff, restricted spine respond to fastest.

Lower-force and instrument-assisted adjusting uses a handheld instrument or a drop table to deliver the same directional input with a fraction of the force and no twisting.

That is how we treat osteoporosis, recent surgery, significant arthritis, or simple nerves about being adjusted by hand. Both offices use it heavily with older patients.

Extremity adjusting matters because shoulders, hips, knees, wrists and ankles are joints too. A restricted hip or a stiff mid-foot will quietly load your lower back for years, so we examine your limbs alongside your spine.

Supporting soft-tissue and rehabilitative work decides whether the motion holds. Adjusting restores movement at the joint, muscle and fascia keep it there, so we add manual work and specific loading when the joint keeps sliding back into the same restriction between visits.

How it works

  1. The restriction

A spinal joint stops moving through its full range. Load that segment used to carry shifts onto the tissue on either side of it.

  2. The referred complaint

The tissue picking up that extra load is usually where you feel the pain. That is why the sore spot and the actual problem are so often in different places, and why heat and ibuprofen on the sore spot keep failing.

  3. The adjustment

Examination finds the restricted segment, and a directed force restores its motion. Soft-tissue work and specific loading decide whether that change holds between visits.

Who chiropractic care helps

  • Mechanical back and neck pain tied to joint restriction
  • Headaches that begin at the base of the skull
  • Morning stiffness that loosens once you start moving
  • A restricted hip or a stiff mid-foot loading the low back

Who it does not help

  • Pain from a structural lesion that has stopped responding to conservative care
  • Nerve compression that testing says needs a referral rather than a longer plan
  • A red flag finding, which needs imaging or the right provider before any adjustment

Background reading from an independent authority: a 2019 systematic review of spinal manipulative therapy for chronic low back pain.

Conditions we treat with it

You can read more about each one. The examination decides which of them applies to you.

Why patients choose it

Nothing is cut or fused

Nothing is cut, nothing is fused, nothing is permanently altered. If chiropractic does not work for you, every other option is still open to you afterward.

The examination comes first

Orthopedic and neurological testing, movement screening, and imaging when a specific question needs answering. Care is built on what we find. A warning sign means you are sent for the right test instead of being adjusted.

The plan has an end date and a re-check

You are re-examined on a schedule, so progress is measured rather than assumed. The plan can be shortened, changed or closed out when the findings say so.

One doctor, one set of records

Dr. Bergin performs the examination personally and follows the case himself. There is no handoff to a rotating associate who has to rebuild your history from a chart.

Cost, insurance and financing

What a plan of care costs you depends on a few things. The front desk gives you the figure before you commit, and the report of findings tells you how long the plan runs.

The one published price

Consultation, Exam, X-Rays (If Needed) & Report of Findings: Only $47

What affects the cost

  • Whether the visit is an examination or a follow-up adjustment
  • Whether imaging is needed to answer a specific question
  • Your plan deductible, copay and visit allowance
  • How long the plan of care runs and whether supporting therapy is included
  • Whether one region or several are being treated at each visit

What a course includes

  • Consultation with Dr. Justin Bergin, DC
  • Orthopedic and neurological examination
  • X-rays if they are clinically indicated
  • Report of findings

Conditions We Treat with Chiropractic Care

Back pain. The largest share of our chiropractic caseload. It runs from acute episodes that stop you standing up straight to chronic low back pain that keeps coming back every few months for years.

Neck pain. Desk posture, phone posture, sleeping wrong, old whiplash. Neck cases usually involve the upper back as well, and treating only the neck is why they relapse.

Headaches and migraines. Pain that starts at the base of the skull and wraps forward. It usually tracks with restriction in the upper neck joints and tension through the shoulders.

Sciatica. Pain, numbness or burning that travels from the lower back into the buttock and down the leg. We examine it carefully to find out whether the nerve is irritated at the spine, at the hip, or somewhere in between.

General musculoskeletal pain. Shoulders, hips, ribs and the mid-back complaints that never get a tidy diagnosis but keep interfering with sleep and work.

Car accident injuries. Whiplash and soft-tissue trauma after a crash, documented properly from the first visit, which matters both clinically and for any claim.

What Happens Between Visits

Care here is not only what happens on the table. You leave with the two or three things that matter for your case.

How to sit at the desk you actually use, which position to sleep in, and what to load and what to leave alone this week. Patients who do them hold their progress and finish sooner.

Why ChiroMed

Who runs your case, and for how long?

Dr. Justin Bergin, DC has 22 years in practice and two Central Florida offices. The concierge model gives you the appointment length your problem actually needs.

What sits behind the adjustment?

Spinal and knee decompression, Omniwave shockwave, Neuromed electroanalgesia, and regenerative, metabolic and sexual-wellness care are all in the same building. One Doctor of Chiropractic directs all of it.

When adjusting alone is not enough, the next step is not a new clinic. You do not start over with a new intake form and a provider who has never met you.

Chiropractic is the entry point rather than the whole story, and you can see how our chiropractic services connect to the rest of your care.

Where you would be treated

Which office is easier for you to reach?

Both offices deliver the same chiropractic care, so you can be seen at whichever one suits your week.

The Lakeland office sits on S. Florida Avenue in Suite 13, a short drive from Southgate Shopping Center and Lakeside Village. Patients coming from Highland City, Christina, Scott Lake and Dixieland get there quickly off the Polk Parkway.

What if the Lady Lake office is closer?

It is on North US-441 just above CR 466, a straightforward drive from Spanish Springs Town Square.

Patients come across from Summerfield, Oxford and Wildwood, and from the rest of Lake, Sumter and Marion counties.

In Lakeland that is 6595 Florida Ave S, Suite 13, Lakeland, serving Polk County. In the Villages market the office is at 929 US-441 #404, Lady Lake, serving Lake County, Sumter County, Marion County. Dr. Justin Bergin, DC performs the examination personally at both, 22 years into practice.

Chiropractic Care in recent research

These sources are independent of this practice and none of them endorses it. They are listed so the reasoning behind the care can be checked rather than taken on trust.

  1. Noninvasive Treatments for Acute, Subacute, and Chronic Low Back Pain: A Clinical Practice Guideline From the American College of Physicians

    Annals of Internal Medicine, 2017

The guideline that placed spinal manipulation among the non-drug first-line options for low back pain.

  2. Spinal Manipulation: What You Need To Know

National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2022

A plain summary for patients of what manipulation does and does not do, including the rare but real risks.

  3. Association of Spinal Manipulative Therapy With Clinical Benefit and Harm for Acute Low Back Pain: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    JAMA, 2017

Found modest improvement in pain and function at up to six weeks with transient minor soreness, and noted that results varied widely between trials.

Compare your options

Real alternatives exist, including ones this practice does not perform. Here is the honest set.

Option What it isTypically considered whenInvasive?Offered at ChiroMed?
Chiropractic adjustment Our approach Hands-on or instrument-assisted movement of a specific spinal joint Pain and stiffness tied to joint restriction, posture or a recent strainNoYes
Rehabilitative exercise and soft-tissue work Loaded movement plus manual work on muscle and fascia The joint moves better after adjusting but the tissue around it keeps re-tighteningNoYes
Spinal decompression Computer-controlled cycles of traction that gently separate two vertebrae Disc pressure or nerve-root irritation is driving the pain and adjusting alone has not settled itNoYes
Prescription pain and muscle relaxant medication Drug therapy aimed at the pain signal Short-term control while a cause is being identifiedNoNot prescribed here. Reasonable for short-term control under the prescriber who knows your history
Epidural or nerve-root injection Steroid placed near an irritated nerve root under imaging Nerve pain that has not settled with conservative care, where imaging shows a matching lesionMinimallyNot performed here. Appropriate when conservative care has failed and imaging confirms the source
Spine surgery Surgical removal or fusion of the structure compressing a nerve Progressive weakness, bowel or bladder change, or a confirmed lesion that has failed everything elseYesNot performed here. Surgery has a real place and we will tell you when you have reached it

Two of the six options above are not performed at this clinic, and both are right for some patients. The first visit tells you which group you are in.

Is chiropractic care right for someone like you?

Candidacy is decided at the examination, not on a web page. These are the general lines.

Likely a good candidate if

  • Your pain is worse in certain positions and better in others
  • You have been told the imaging is normal but you still hurt
  • Stiffness in the morning that loosens once you start moving
  • Headaches that begin at the base of the skull
  • You want to try something before medication or injections
  • Neck pain that traces back to an old whiplash injury
We work out whether you are a good fit at the first visit. Some of the most useful appointments we have end in a referral rather than a care plan.

We will point you elsewhere if

  • Sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, which is an emergency
  • Progressive weakness, or a foot that is starting to drag
  • Unexplained weight loss, fever, or night pain that does not change with position
  • You take blood thinners or have known bone fragility with no current scan
  • A recent significant fall or crash that has not been imaged

When we are not the right answer, we say so, and connect you with someone who is.

Not sure? That is exactly what the examination answers

Your first visit

What to expect, step by step

Your first visit is an examination, not a treatment. Dr. Justin Bergin, DC takes your history, tests how the spine moves and takes X-rays if they are needed.

You come back for a report of findings, where he tells you what he found and what he thinks care should look like. The length of a course is set at that appointment, once there is something real to base it on.

  1. A clinician and patient talking across the consulting desk at the first visit.
    01

    Discovery consultation

You tell the story in full. What happened, what you have already tried, what you are no longer able to do. Nobody interrupts you and nobody is watching the clock.

  2. A ChiroMed treatment room with a drop-piece adjustment table, a rolling stool and a wall-mounted monitor.
    02

    Examination and imaging if needed

Orthopedic and neurological testing, movement screening, and digital X-rays when the findings call for them. Imaging is taken because a question needs answering, never by default.

  3. 03

    Report of findings

Dr. Bergin sits down and shows you what he found, what he believes is driving it, and what care would look like. You decide from there, with the cost in front of you.

  4. A chiropractor adjusting a patient spine at the ChiroMed treatment table
    04

    Care and re-check

Adjusting plus any supporting work, then a scheduled re-examination. The plan is measured against your actual progress rather than assumed.

  5. An adjustment that is not aimed at a specific finding is just noise. We treat what the exam and the X-ray tell us to treat.

What is a red flag in chiropractic?

A red flag is a finding that means imaging or a referral comes before any adjustment.

The ones that matter most are loss of bladder or bowel control, progressive weakness or numbness in a limb, and unexplained weight loss. Fever, a history of cancer, night pain that does not change with position and significant recent trauma also count.

Dr. Bergin screens for all of them at the first visit. If one turns up, you are sent for the right test or the right provider instead of being adjusted.

the clinic team
Why do doctors discourage chiropractors?

Some do, and the usual reasons are inconsistent quality across the profession, open-ended care plans, and claims made for problems outside a musculoskeletal scope. Those are fair criticisms of bad practice.

The published evidence for spinal manipulation in mechanical back and neck pain is reasonable, and most major back-pain guidelines list manual therapy as an option before medication or surgery.

Ask any chiropractor how they screen for red flags, how long the plan runs, and what would make them refer you out.

the clinic team
Can a chiropractor fix a pinched nerve?

It depends on what is pinching it. When a nerve is irritated by joint restriction, muscle tension or disc pressure, chiropractic care and decompression can take that pressure off, and the symptoms often settle.

When the nerve is compressed by a structural lesion that has stopped responding, you need a referral rather than a longer care plan. Testing at the first visit is what separates the two.

the clinic team
What is the average cost of a chiropractic adjustment in Florida?

It varies by clinic, by region and by whether insurance is involved, so any single figure is misleading.

Here is how it works at ChiroMed. Chiropractic care bills insurance, and the front desk verifies your benefits before your first visit so you know your copay in advance.

New patients can start with the $47 consultation, exam, X-rays if needed, and report of findings.

the clinic team
Does the adjustment hurt?

For most people it does not. The audible release people expect is gas moving inside the joint, not bone on bone.

Some patients feel mild soreness for a day afterward, similar to the feeling after new exercise.

If manual adjusting is not something you want, say so. Instrument-assisted and drop-table techniques produce a similar effect with far less force, and older patients frequently prefer them.

the clinic team
How long before I know whether it is working?

You get a re-examination date at the report of findings. On that date the question is answered with testing rather than with a feeling.

Many patients notice a change in the first few weeks, and some take longer, particularly where the problem has been building for years.

An open-ended plan with no checkpoint is not how we work. If your progress has not moved by the re-check, the plan changes or you are referred on.
