Pregnancy Chiropractic at ChiroMed

When did getting out of the car become a manoeuvre?

Somewhere around week 24 the complaints change. Standing at the sink becomes a negotiation, and rolling over wakes you up.

Getting out of the car turns into a two-stage manoeuvre with a hand on the door frame. The advice you keep getting is to rest, which is impossible, or to take something, which you would rather not.

Who treats the mechanical part of that?

Dr. Justin Bergin, DC treats it at both offices, with low-force, carefully positioned care. He does it inside the boundaries your obstetric team sets.

Prenatal work is one part of the chiropractic side of this practice, and the same examination habits apply to all of it.

It is one of the treatments offered through our chiropractic services.

What pregnancy chiropractic actually does

Pregnancy chiropractic is low-force, positioned care for the joints of the spine, pelvis and hips during and after pregnancy. You lie on your side with support cushions, never on your abdomen. A Doctor of Chiropractic uses gentle manual, drop-table or instrument methods, plus soft-tissue work, to reduce pain and restore movement.

The changes driving the pain are well documented. Relaxin loosens the pelvic ligaments in preparation for delivery, the growing uterus pulls the pelvis forward, and the lower back compensates by increasing its curve.

Add a pelvic floor and deep abdominal wall working under new load, and you have joints moving through ranges they were never conditioned for. It is a mechanical problem that hormones speed up, and conservative care is built for exactly that.

Staying mobile is protective. A clinical reference summary on exercise during pregnancy links regular activity with lower rates of low back pain and pelvic girdle pain.

The trouble is that pain makes movement unattractive, and the less you move the worse the loading gets. Interrupting that loop is the practical goal of prenatal care.

The aim is enough relief to keep walking, keep sleeping and keep doing the exercise that protects you.

Technique is what makes this care appropriate in pregnancy. Positioning, force and what gets referred back to your obstetric provider are all settled before anything is done.

How it works

  1. The setup

You are set up side-lying on cushions with nothing pressing on the abdomen. Positioning is settled before anything is done.

  2. The input

Gentle manual, drop-table or instrument methods are used to reduce pain and restore movement, with soft-tissue work on the hips and glutes.

  3. The scaling

Force scales down as you progress, so instrument-assisted and drop-table methods become the default in the later weeks.

Who pregnancy chiropractic helps

  • Back, pelvic, hip or rib pain that limits walking, sleeping or standing
  • Joints carrying a load they were never conditioned for
  • Patients who would rather not take something for the rest of the pregnancy

Who it does not help

  • Fetal position, labor length or delivery outcomes, which we make no claims about
  • Anything obstetric rather than musculoskeletal, which goes back to the provider managing your pregnancy
  • Pain that needs analgesia, which your obstetric provider chooses

Background reading from an independent authority: a clinical reference summary on exercise during pregnancy.

Conditions we treat with it

You can read more about each one. The examination decides which of them applies to you.

Why patients choose it

Nothing is taken internally

The care is external, mechanical and drug free, which removes the calculation you have to make about every tablet for the rest of the pregnancy.

Force scales down as you progress

Instrument-assisted and drop-table methods deliver a directional input with very little load, and they become the default in the third trimester when positioning options narrow.

Your obstetric provider stays in charge

Chiropractic handles the musculoskeletal side. Anything obstetric goes back to the provider managing your pregnancy, and Dr. Bergin will tell you when that is the right call.

Postpartum care continues in the same place

Feeding posture, one-sided carrying and a recovering abdominal wall produce a different set of complaints. The same doctor picks those up without you starting over somewhere new.

Cost, insurance and financing

A few things change the cost of a course of prenatal care. The front desk puts the figure in front of you before anything is booked.

The one published price

Consultation, Exam, X-Rays (If Needed) & Report of Findings: Only $47

What affects the cost

  • Whether the appointment is an initial examination or a follow-up visit
  • Your stage of pregnancy and therefore how often care is needed
  • Your plan deductible, copay and visit allowance
  • Whether supporting soft-tissue work forms part of the visit
  • Whether care continues after delivery as postpartum rather than prenatal visits

What a course includes

  • Consultation with Dr. Justin Bergin, DC
  • Pregnancy-appropriate examination
  • Report of findings
  • Positioning and home-care guidance you can use the same night

Payment:

Chiropractic care at ChiroMed bills insurance, and our team verifies your benefits before your first visit.

New patients can begin with the consultation, exam, X-rays if needed, and report of findings for $47. X-rays are not part of a prenatal examination.

Payment plans are available for self-pay care, and the front desk tells you which plan fits your course of care.

What Pregnancy Chiropractic Is Used For

Low back pain. The most common reason patients book, usually a deep ache across the belt line that worsens through the day and peaks in the third trimester.

Pelvic and pubic pain. Sharp, one-sided or central pain on stairs, when parting the legs, or when standing on one foot to dress. This responds well to a combination of joint work, glute activation and a support belt used correctly.

Hip pain. Deep lateral hip pain that shows up in side-lying, plus one-sided hip and groin pain that flares at night. That one is frequently the pelvis rather than the hip joint itself.

Mid-back and rib discomfort. The ribcage widens, the thoracic spine stiffens, and breathing deeply starts to pinch. Gentle mobilization of that region tends to give quick relief.

Small Changes That Help Between Visits

Most of the relief you get from a course of prenatal care is held in place by three or four unglamorous habits.

  • Sleep with a pillow between the knees. It keeps the pelvis level through the night.
  • Sit on a firm surface rather than sinking into a soft couch. That stops the low back rounding for hours at a stretch.
  • Get out of the car by swinging both legs together. It takes the load off a painful pubic joint.
  • Swap one long walk for two short ones. That usually keeps you moving on days when the first version would have finished you.

You leave the first visit with the short list that applies to your case, rather than a generic handout.

Why ChiroMed

Who would be treating you, and for how long?

Dr. Justin Bergin, DC has 22 years in practice and has treated a great many patients through pregnancy and afterward. He is also comfortable saying when something is not his to treat.

The concierge model matters here in a practical way. Appointments are long enough for you to get positioned properly, be worked on without rushing, and get back off the table at your own speed.

What happens once the pregnancy ends?

Behind him sit spinal and knee decompression, Omniwave shockwave, Neuromed electroanalgesia, and regenerative, metabolic and functional care. When a different problem surfaces, the plan continues in the same building.

Prenatal work is a narrow part of what happens here. The wider chiropractic program this care belongs to holds every patient to the same standards.

Where you would be treated

How far is the parking from the door?

Both offices provide prenatal chiropractic care, and parking at each is close to the door. That matters more in the third trimester than at any other time.

Suite 13 on S. Florida Avenue is a level walk from the parking bay, and patients drive in from Grasslands, Cleveland Heights and Highland City. The Harden Blvd approach avoids the worst of the Florida Avenue traffic.

Is the Lady Lake office the easier drive?

The Lady Lake office sits on North US-441 a little above CR 466, with ground-level parking.

Younger families in Fruitland Park, Leesburg and Wildwood use it rather than driving to a hospital campus for musculoskeletal pain.

In Lakeland that is 6595 Florida Ave S, Suite 13, Lakeland, serving Polk County. In the Villages market the office is at 929 US-441 #404, Lady Lake, serving Lake County, Sumter County, Marion County. Dr. Justin Bergin, DC performs the examination personally at both, 22 years into practice.

Pregnancy Chiropractic in recent research

These sources are independent of this practice and none of them endorses it. They are listed so the reasoning behind the care can be checked rather than taken on trust.

  1. Interventions for preventing and treating low-back and pelvic pain during pregnancy

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2015

Low quality evidence that exercise reduces pregnancy related low back pain, with single studies suggesting manual therapy may help pelvic pain. Evidence remains limited.

  2. Back Pain During Pregnancy

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 2025

The obstetric college's own patient guidance on why back pain happens in pregnancy and what relief is reasonable.

Compare your options

Real alternatives exist, including ones this practice does not perform. Here is the honest set.

Option What it isTypically considered whenInvasive?Offered at ChiroMed?
Low-force prenatal chiropractic Our approach Gentle side-lying joint work with support cushions plus home positioning advice Back, pelvic or hip pain that limits walking, sleeping or standingNoYes
Supported movement and stabilization work Guided exercise for the hips, deep abdominal wall and glutes Pain that returns whenever activity increasesNoYes
Maternity support belt and positioning changes External support for the pelvis plus sleep and sitting adjustments Pelvic pain that is worse on one leg, on stairs, or getting out of the carNoAdvised here. The belt is bought retail and we fit and coach it
Pain medication in pregnancy Analgesia chosen by your obstetric provider Pain that is not manageable with conservative careNoNot prescribed here. That decision belongs to your obstetrician or midwife
Injection therapy for pelvic or sacroiliac pain Steroid or anesthetic placed into or near a joint Severe localized joint pain that has failed conservative careMinimallyNot performed here. Appropriate when your obstetric team judges the benefit outweighs the risk

Two of these five are outside what this clinic does, and one of them is a retail item we simply help you use properly. Nothing on the list replaces the judgment of the provider managing your pregnancy.

Is pregnancy chiropractic right for someone like you?

Candidacy is decided at the examination, not on a web page. These are the general lines.

Likely a good candidate if

  • Low back pain that started or worsened after the first trimester
  • Pelvic or pubic pain on stairs, when parting the legs, or getting out of a car
  • Mid-back and rib discomfort as the ribcage widens
  • Sciatic-type pain running into one buttock or thigh
  • You want conservative care first and your obstetric provider agrees
Screening matters more in this group than in any other we see, because some symptoms that look musculoskeletal are not. If anything on the second list appears, you are directed to your obstetric provider rather than treated.

We will point you elsewhere if

  • Vaginal bleeding, fluid loss or abdominal cramping, which needs your obstetric provider the same day
  • Placenta previa, pre-eclampsia or another diagnosed complication without clearance
  • Severe or sudden headache, visual change or swelling
  • Reduced fetal movement, which is an urgent obstetric matter and not a chiropractic one
  • Progressive leg weakness or any loss of bladder or bowel control

When we are not the right answer, we say so, and connect you with someone who is.

Not sure? That is exactly what the examination answers

Your first visit

What to expect, step by step

The first visit is an examination and a conversation, not an adjustment. Dr. Justin Bergin, DC asks how far along you are, what hurts and what your pregnancy has been like so far.

He explains what he found and how care would be adapted as your pregnancy goes on. Visits are usually spaced around how you are feeling rather than fixed in advance.

  1. A clinician and patient talking across the consulting desk at the first visit.
    01

    Consultation and obstetric context

We go through your stage of pregnancy, your history, how the pain behaves, and who is managing your obstetric care. Anything belonging to that provider goes back to them.

  2. 02

    Gentle examination

Movement, pelvic and hip testing performed in positions you can actually tolerate at your stage. No X-rays are taken during pregnancy.

  3. A clinician walking a patient through their findings on screen.
    03

    Positioned, low-force care

You are set up side-lying on cushions with nothing pressing on the abdomen. Dr. Bergin uses low-force, instrument-assisted and drop-table methods along with soft-tissue work on the hips and glutes.

  4. 04

    Home plan and review

Sleep positions, sitting setup, a short list of supported movements, and a review point. Care tracks the trimester you are actually in rather than the one you started in.

  5. An adjustment that is not aimed at a specific finding is just noise. We treat what the exam and the X-ray tell us to treat.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

For most healthy pregnancies, gentle chiropractic care for musculoskeletal pain is considered low risk and is widely used.

Technique and positioning are what make it appropriate: side-lying setup, support cushions, no pressure on the abdomen, low-force methods, and no X-rays.

Research in this specific population is limited. Tell your obstetrician or midwife that you plan to come, and tell us about any complication you have been given, because some of them mean we wait or decline.

the clinic team
How late in pregnancy can I still be adjusted?

Patients are commonly seen right through the third trimester and into the final weeks, provided the pregnancy is uncomplicated and positioning is still comfortable.

What changes is how you are set up and how much force is used, both of which get lighter as you progress.

If you have been placed on activity restriction by your obstetric provider, bring that instruction with you and we work inside it.

the clinic team
Do I need a referral from my obstetrician?

Florida does not require a referral to see a chiropractor, and most patients book directly.

We do want your obstetric provider in the loop. That matters particularly if you are carrying multiples, have a diagnosed complication, or are managing something like gestational diabetes or high blood pressure.

Where a case needs a conversation between providers, we are happy to have it.

the clinic team
Can chiropractic care turn a breech baby or make labor easier?

We make no claims about fetal position, labor length or delivery outcomes, and we would be cautious about anyone who does.

The reason to come is musculoskeletal: back, pelvic, hip and rib pain that is limiting your sleep and your ability to move. That is what this care addresses and what we will measure at your review.

the clinic team
Will my insurance cover it?

Chiropractic care here bills insurance, and coverage depends on your specific plan rather than on the fact that you are pregnant.

The front desk verifies your benefits before your first visit so there is no surprise at checkout.

If you would rather not run it through insurance, the $47 new patient visit covers the consultation, exam, imaging if needed, and report of findings.

the clinic team
What about after the baby arrives?

Postpartum is when many patients actually need the most help. Feeding posture, carrying a car seat on one side, and a pelvis and abdominal wall still recovering all take a toll.

Care can resume as soon as you are comfortable traveling, and it usually focuses on the mid-back, neck and hips rather than the pelvis alone.

Bring the baby. Nobody here minds.
