“I have had sich a great experience seeing Dr. Bergin. When other offices have told me I just had muscle damage or the only thing they could do for me was give shots, he said he had others ways to manage my pain and numbness, along with improving mobility. And he was right! I feel so much better! With such friendly staff and welcoming office environment, it makes for an amazing experience. I'll definitely continue seeing him!”

Pelvic Floor Recovery at ChiroMed
Have you already rearranged your day around it?
You have worked out which shops have accessible toilets. You have stopped drinking water after four in the afternoon.
There is a spare set of clothes in the car, and a reason you no longer join the doubles game.
Why does nobody say any of this out loud?
None of it gets said out loud, because the one time you mentioned it you were told it happens to everyone at your age.
It does happen to a great many people. That does not make it something you have to live with.
Where does this sit inside the practice?
Pelvic floor recovery is one of the quieter services inside the rehabilitation side of this practice, and it is one of the most worthwhile.
It is one of the treatments offered through our pain control clinic.
What pelvic floor recovery actually does
Pelvic floor recovery is conservative retraining of the muscles that support the bladder, bowel and pelvic organs. It also covers the hips, low back and breathing pattern that load them. It is used for leaking, urgency, pelvic weakness and pelvic pain in both women and men. Nothing internal happens at this clinic: no surgery, no mesh, no medication.
The pelvic floor is a sling of muscle at the base of the pelvis. Like any other muscle group it can be weak, it can be too tight, or it can simply have lost its timing.
That distinction matters more than anything else, because the three problems need opposite treatment. A floor that is weak needs strengthening. A floor that is chronically overactive gets worse with more squeezing, which is exactly what most people are told to do.
Working out which one you have is the first job, and it is why generic advice so often fails.
The pelvic floor does not work on its own. It works with the deep abdominal wall, the diaphragm and the glutes, and it is loaded by how you breathe, how you sit, and how your hips and low back move.
A patient with a stiff mid-back and a breath-holding habit is loading the pelvic floor with every lift they make. Treating the floor while ignoring that gives a short-lived result.
How it works
The examination
The first job is working out whether your floor is weak, overactive, or simply mistimed. That is an external, clothed assessment of the pelvis, hips, low back and breathing pattern.
The retraining
What follows is graded loading rather than a leaflet of squeezes. The program is checked and progressed as you go, because an exercise done well still fails if it is the wrong one.
The loading chain
The hips, low back, deep abdominal wall and breathing pattern are treated alongside the floor, because they are what loads it. A floor retrained on its own goes back to the same load.
Who pelvic floor recovery helps
- A pelvic floor that is genuinely weak and needs graded strengthening
- A pelvic floor that is chronically overactive rather than weak
- A floor that has lost its timing rather than its strength
- Men after prostate surgery, who benefit most from conservative care and are offered it least
- Pelvic or low back pain that nobody has connected to pelvic floor function
Who it does not help
- Symptoms with a red flag that a physician has not yet ruled out
- Anyone looking for internal examination and treatment
- Prolapse or complex pelvic pain that external conservative care has not moved
- Incontinence or prolapse that has already failed a genuine course of conservative care
Background reading from an independent authority: a Cochrane review of pelvic floor muscle training approaches for urinary incontinence in women.
Conditions we treat with it
You can read more about each one. The examination decides which of them applies to you.
Why patients choose it
We treat it as a muscle problem
Patients tell us they were told this is normal at your age, and that is the reason so many wait years. Muscles respond to correct training at 70 the same way they do at 40.
Men are treated here too
Pelvic floor care is presented almost everywhere as a women's service. Men after prostate surgery and men with urgency or pelvic pain are seen at both offices, with the same discretion.
The whole loading chain is assessed
Hips, low back, deep abdominal wall and breathing pattern all load the pelvic floor. Treating the floor alone is why so many patients have already tried and given up.
Nothing is implanted and nothing is prescribed
Conservative care keeps every later option open, including the surgical ones. Once mesh or a sling is in place, you cannot go back to having neither.
The conservative-first order follows the evidence
A Cochrane review of pelvic floor muscle training approaches for urinary incontinence in women supports supervised training as a first-line treatment, and most guidelines recommend it ahead of surgery. The male evidence base is smaller, but the mechanism is the same.
You are told plainly what is not done here
The examination is external and you stay clothed. Nobody discovers halfway through a plan that the service is something other than what was described at the first visit.
Cost, insurance and financing
Pelvic floor recovery is a self-pay service. Most people researching it have already been quoted for something invasive. These are the things that change what you pay.
The one published price
Consultation, Exam, X-Rays (If Needed) & Report of Findings: Only $47
What affects the cost
- Whether the plan targets the pelvic floor alone or the hips and low back as well
- How long the retraining plan runs before your review point
- Whether supporting manual therapy is part of each visit
- Whether a referral for internal assessment is needed alongside it
- Whether chiropractic care is part of the plan, since that portion can be billed to insurance
What a course includes
- A private consultation with Dr. Justin Bergin, DC
- External examination of the pelvic, hip, low back and breathing mechanics
- X-rays if they are clinically indicated
- Report of findings plus a home program you leave with
Payment:
Pelvic floor recovery at ChiroMed is self-pay. If chiropractic care is part of your plan, that portion can be billed to insurance.
Medicare coverage varies by plan and by service, and our front desk will tell you exactly what applies before you commit to anything.
New patients begin with the consultation, exam, X-rays if needed, and report of findings for $47. Payment plans are available for self-pay care, and the front desk tells you which plan fits your course of care.
Why ChiroMed
Is the appointment long enough to actually talk?
The first thing that makes this work at ChiroMed is time. A concierge appointment is long enough for a conversation most people have been avoiding for years.
It happens in a closed room, with a doctor who has heard it many times before.
Who is reading the loading chain?
Dr. Justin Bergin, DC has spent 22 years treating hips, pelvises and low backs. That is the loading chain the pelvic floor lives in, so the assessment goes wider than the symptom.
What if the real driver is somewhere else?
Behind that sits the rest of the clinic on a single plan. Chiropractic care, spinal and knee decompression, Omniwave shockwave, Neuromed electroanalgesia and the metabolic and functional lines are all here.
A pelvic problem with a lumbar driver does not need a second clinic. Where the case is a nerve case, the disc and nerve rehabilitation pathway used here takes it from there.
Where you would be treated
How private is a small practice, really?
Discretion is easier at a small practice than at a hospital campus, and both offices run this service.
In Polk County, Suite 13 on S. Florida Avenue is a short drive from Dixieland, Christina, Highland City and Cleveland Heights. Parking is directly outside, so there is no long corridor walk.
Which office is closer to The Villages?
The Lady Lake office on North US-441 sits just above CR 466, minutes from Spanish Springs Town Square. It is an easy drive from Summerfield, Oxford, Wildwood and Fruitland Park.
A great deal of unspoken demand for this care sits across Lake, Sumter and Marion counties.
In Lakeland that is 6595 Florida Ave S, Suite 13, Lakeland, serving Polk County. In the Villages market the office is at 929 US-441 #404, Lady Lake, serving Lake County, Sumter County, Marion County. Dr. Justin Bergin, DC performs the examination personally at both, 22 years into practice.

- Three Reasons Kegels Stop Working, and What to Check Next
Kegels stall when the pelvic floor is already tight, when the wrong muscles fire, or when the spine and breath load it. Here is how to tell which one applies.

These sources are independent of this practice and none of them endorses it. They are listed so the reasoning behind the care can be checked rather than taken on trust.
- Pelvic floor muscle training versus no treatment, or inactive control treatments, for urinary incontinence in women
Cochrane found trained pelvic floor work improves stress and mixed incontinence symptoms, and recommends it as first-line conservative management for women.

Structured training in early pregnancy may prevent later incontinence, though its use as a treatment after birth remains uncertain.

Compare your options
Real alternatives exist, including ones this practice does not perform. Here is the honest set.
| Option | What it is | Typically considered when | Invasive? | Offered at ChiroMed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pelvic floor recovery at ChiroMed Our approach | External, clothed retraining of the pelvic floor plus the hips, low back and breathing pattern that load it | Leaking, urgency or pelvic weakness where you want conservative care first | No | Yes |
| Home pelvic floor exercises alone | Self-directed squeezing routines from a leaflet or an app | Mild symptoms in someone who has been shown the correct technique | No | Advised here, once we have checked you are doing the right one for your problem |
| Specialist pelvic health physical therapy with internal assessment | Internal examination and treatment by a therapist trained specifically in pelvic health | Complex pelvic pain, prolapse, or a case that has not responded to external conservative care | Minimally | Not performed here. We refer where your case calls for it |
| Bladder medication | Prescription drugs that calm an overactive bladder | Urgency and frequency that a prescriber judges suitable for medication | No | Not prescribed here. A reasonable option through your physician or urologist |
| Sling, mesh or other continence surgery | Surgical support placed to hold the urethra or pelvic organs | Significant incontinence or prolapse that has failed a genuine course of conservative care | Yes | Not performed here. Appropriate when conservative treatment has been properly tried and has not worked |
Three of these five sit with other providers, and one of them is homework we make sure you are doing correctly. Most guidelines put conservative care before surgery, and that is the order we follow.
Is pelvic floor recovery right for someone like you?
Candidacy is decided at the examination, not on a web page. These are the general lines.
Likely a good candidate if
- Leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh, lift or hit a serve
- Sudden urgency, or planning your day around the nearest toilet
- Weakness or heaviness in the pelvis after childbirth, even years later
- Ongoing leaking or weak flow control after prostate surgery
- Pelvic or low back pain that no one has connected to pelvic floor function
- You want a serious attempt at conservative care before considering medication or surgery
We will point you elsewhere if
- There is blood in the urine, which needs medical assessment before anything else
- You have pain or burning on passing urine, or a suspected infection
- You have a sudden change in bladder or bowel control alongside back pain or leg numbness, which is an emergency
- You have unexplained pelvic pain, weight loss or fever that has not been investigated
- You are looking for internal pelvic examination and treatment, which is a referral from here
When we are not the right answer, we say so, and connect you with someone who is.
Your first visit
What to expect, step by step

Is this only for women?
No. Men have a pelvic floor and it fails in the same ways. After prostate surgery, leaking and poor flow control are common and rarely given a conservative option.
Men also present with urgency, and with pelvic or perineal pain that has been investigated and found to have no infection behind it.
Both offices treat men and women, the assessment is external and clothed, and the appointment is private.
Are Kegels not enough on their own?
Sometimes they are, when the problem is genuine weakness and the technique is correct. Often they are not, and in one group they make things worse.
A pelvic floor that is chronically overactive rather than weak responds badly to more squeezing. A large number of people who have tried and failed fall into that group.
The first job is working out which problem you have, which is what the examination is for.
Will this work if I have had the problem for years?
Duration matters less than most people expect. Muscle responds to correct, progressive training regardless of how long the pattern has been in place.
Some of the best results we see are in people who assumed it was too late.
What changes the odds is whether the right problem is being treated, and whether the loading chain around the pelvis is addressed alongside it.
Does Medicare cover this?
Coverage varies by plan and by service, and our front desk will tell you exactly what applies before you commit to anything.
Pelvic floor recovery here is self-pay, and the front desk says so up front. Payment plans are available for self-pay care, and the front desk will tell you which plan fits the course you have been offered.
How private is the appointment?
The consultation happens in a closed room with the door shut. The examination is external and you remain clothed. Nothing about the reason for your visit is discussed in the reception area.
If it makes the booking easier, tell the front desk you are coming about pelvic or low back function. Leave the detail for the room.
When should I see a doctor instead?
See a physician first if there is blood in your urine, pain or burning on passing urine, or a suspected infection. The same goes for unexplained pelvic pain, fever or weight loss.
A sudden change in bladder or bowel control alongside back pain or leg numbness is an emergency. That needs an emergency department, not an appointment here.
Once those are ruled out, conservative care is the usual first step in most guidelines.
