Disc loading and nerve root irritation
Where force passes through a disc that was already narrowed, the segment shears enough to irritate the nerve root beside it. That is the version that sends burning or numbness into a limb, and the one that changes the plan most.

How soon after a collision should I be examined at the Lady Lake office?
As soon as you can get in, and preferably inside the first week. Injured tissue is easiest to influence while it is still actively repairing. There is a practical reason too. This office treats Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, with Tuesday and Friday by appointment. A Tuesday call is often answered with a Wednesday slot. Say on the phone that it follows an accident and the front desk will move you up the list.
I was on a golf cart, not in a car. Does that change the examination?
It changes what we look at first. A cart has no belt and nothing around you, so the body usually lands rather than being restrained, and the injury pattern sits on one side: wrist, hip, ribs, shoulder. The spinal part is a jolt through a trunk that was already turning, which leaves an uneven pattern of restriction. We examine the landing side and the spine together, because treating only the sore hip leaves the rest of it to stiffen.
Can you tell a new injury from the arthritis I already had?
That is the most useful thing the first visit does, and it is why measurement matters more than an opinion. Long-standing change tends to be symmetrical, painless to a point and matched by what you could already do. A fresh injury is localized, guarded and out of step with the rest of your history. X-rays show the old picture. The examination shows what has changed since Saturday. Where the two disagree, the examination wins.
Do I need to have been in a serious accident for this to be worth doing?
No, and low speed is a poor reassurance. A low-speed knock in a parking lot at one of the squares can leave a car unmarked and still put enough force through an arthritic neck to set off weeks of symptoms. What decides whether it matters is not the damage to the vehicle. It is how much of the load reached tissue that had no slack left in it.
