Has somebody already said the word fusion?

Ask around the pool here and somebody will tell you a surgeon has mentioned a fusion. Somebody two chairs along has already had one.

Is that really the disc story in this market?

In this market the disc story is rarely a thirty-five-year-old who lifted a boat trailer badly.

It is a back that has carried load for seventy years, a canal that narrowed so slowly nobody noticed, and a leg that quits after two hundred yards of Spanish Springs.

Is decompression a fair question to ask at that point?

It is. So is an examination willing to tell you the table is the wrong tool for your spine.

What spinal decompression is

Spinal decompression is non-surgical traction. You lie clothed on a motorized table in a padded harness while a computer applies and releases a pull along the spine in slow cycles, lowering pressure inside a disc and freeing room around a crowded nerve root.

Two questions decide whether the table suits you, and both come up constantly at this end of Lake County: what is crowding the nerve, and what your spine will tolerate.

The findings that rule the table out turn up regularly in a retired population, and a leg can hurt for reasons that have nothing to do with the spine at all.

That last point matters here, because patients often arrive already managing blood sugar and blood pressure.

It does mean we sometimes tell a patient in The Villages not to buy decompression.

Stenosis, and What It Looks Like in This Market

The pattern is recognizable from across the room. A hundred yards with the dog, then heavy legs, then a bench. You push a shopping cart further than you can walk without one, because leaning on it opens the canal. The cart seat is comfortable. Standing at a counter is not.

Narrowing is slow, so the goal is not a different spine. It is more tolerance for what you have been cutting out: a longer loop, standing through a round of golf, an afternoon in the garden, a night the leg does not interrupt. That is what your re-examination compares.

Who This Suits Here, and Who It Does Not

Likely a good fit if: the leg pain follows a line and troubles you more than the back does. Walking tolerance has dropped and leaning forward helps. Imaging you already have shows a bulge, a herniation or a narrowed canal at the level your symptoms point to. You would rather try conservative care seriously before agreeing to an injection or an operation.

Not appropriate if: you have lost bladder or bowel control or gone numb in the saddle region, which needs an emergency department today. Weakness is worsening week by week, such as a foot that drops. You have hardware or a fusion in the segment that would be treated, advanced osteoporosis, a spinal fracture, or a known abdominal aortic aneurysm.

The office sits on North US-441 a little above the CR 466 junction, in suite 404.

Of the three town squares, Spanish Springs is closest to us, Lake Sumter Landing is an easy run down, and Brownwood Paddock Square is the furthest.

Nobody goes on the table at a first appointment here. Dr. Justin Bergin, DC examines you, reads whatever imaging you already have, and works out whether the leg symptoms match your spine. He says so plainly when decompression is not reasonable. The plan is set at your report of findings and built around the days this office treats.

    Bring your medication list, any imaging you already have, and the name of anyone who has operated on your spine. Histories take longer at 74 than at 40, and this office books for that.

    Examination, and X-rays if they answer something

    Orthopedic and neurological testing, plus a look at how far you get on your feet before the leg complains. X-rays are taken where there is a real question, not as routine.

Patients do arrive by cart. Nothing in a decompression session sedates you, there is no injection and no anesthetic, so you leave the way you came. I have already had a fusion in my back. Can I still be treated here?

Not on the table over the fused or instrumented segment. Hardware and fusion sit on the list of reasons decompression is unsuitable, and that list gets used honestly here. A fusion does not mean nothing can be done for you. The segments above and below a fusion take up extra work and often become the source of the pain, and there is hands-on care, laser and soft tissue work that can be aimed at those. The examination decides, and you are told either way at your report of findings.

How do I find you coming from Brownwood or Lake Sumter Landing?

Work your way north onto US-441 and stay on it past the CR 466 intersection. We are a short way above that junction on the northbound side, at 929 US-441, suite 404. Brownwood Paddock Square is the longest of the three square runs and Lake Sumter Landing is the middle one, so allow a little extra at CR 466 in the morning. From Spanish Springs it is a few minutes.
