Likely a good fit if: the problem has lasted months despite rest. You can point to one painful spot that hurts more under load. A tendon in the heel, shoulder, hip, knee or elbow has plateaued after other treatment. You want something tried before an injection or an operation.

A surgeon suggested operating on my shoulder. Should I try this first?

That depends on what is torn. Where imaging shows a full tear and the arm has lost function, surgery is often the honest answer and you will hear us say so at the examination. Where the tendon is degenerative and irritable rather than ruptured, it is worth asking whether conservative treatment has had a fair run.
