Does this start as back pain, or as a leg?
It rarely announces itself as back pain here. It arrives as a leg that quits.
The pattern people describe at our Lady Lake office is a familiar one. The morning walk that used to be three loops is now one, and the turn for home happens earlier each week.
What has it already taken off your week?
The back nine gets abandoned, not because of the swing but because of standing around between shots.
The drive north to see the grandchildren becomes a series of stops, and the cart seat that ought to be the comfortable option turns out to be the worst one of all.
Which question does nobody arrive with an answer to?
What almost nobody arrives with is an answer to the only question that matters, which is where along the nerve the trouble actually sits.
Disc material pressing on a root, a bony opening that has closed down over twenty years, and a tight muscle deep in the buttock all send pain down the same leg. None of the three answers to the same care.
Who examines the leg, and on which days?
Dr. Justin Bergin, DC has 22 years of doing that examination, and he does it at this address on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Sciatica means pain traveling along the sciatic nerve, from the lower back or buttock down the leg. In an older population the usual source is not a fresh disc herniation but a gradual narrowing of the space the nerve root needs, which is why leaning forward on a golf cart or a shopping cart brings relief. Care here locates the level first, then unloads it.
This page covers The Villages specifically. The neutral sciatica page covers the clinical picture for both offices.
Symptoms
What The Villages patients describe when they call this office.
- Pain running past the knee down one leg
- Burning or electric feeling along the calf
- Pins and needles in the foot
- Relief from leaning forward on a golf cart or shopping cart
- Standing still becoming worse than walking
- Numbness in a patch of the leg or foot
- A deep ache in one buttock after a long drive
- Legs that feel heavy after a few hundred yards
- Pain that spikes on a cough or a sneeze
Common causes
Narrowing of the nerve exit, the common one here
The openings the nerve roots pass through close down as discs lose height and the surrounding joints enlarge. Walking and standing make it worse, leaning forward eases it, and that detail is the most useful thing you can tell us.
Degenerative change with enlarged facet joints
Worn spinal joints grow extra bone, and that bone takes up room the nerve root needs. This is a recognized source in an older population, and treating every sciatica as a young person's disc is how care goes wrong.
A vertebra that has slipped forward
One bone drifting forward on the one below narrows the channel the nerves use. It often turns up on a first film in someone who has had a grumbling back since their forties.
A lumbar disc that finally herniated
Still possible at any age, and the picture differs. Sitting is worse than standing, bending forward hurts, and onset is days rather than years. Response is judged at the review point rather than assumed.
Deep gluteal irritation after long sitting
Where the nerve threads through the muscles of the buttock it can be irritated directly. Long drives to family, long afternoons in the cart and long evenings in a recliner all feed it.
Leg pain that is not sciatica at all
Hip arthritis refers into the groin, gluteal tendon pain stops above the knee, and narrowed leg arteries cause cramping on walking that eases the moment you stand still. That last one matters here and belongs with a physician.
How we treat it at our Lady Lake office
Sciatica care at Lady Lake starts by locating the level, then taking pressure off it and keeping it off. Spinal decompression addresses a disc or a narrowed exit, chiropractic care restores movement in the lower back and pelvis so the gains hold, and Neuromed electroanalgesia is aimed at the nerve pain itself when that is what keeps you awake. Strength and reflexes in the leg are screened at every visit, because a leg getting weaker changes the plan immediately.
Spinal Decompression for a Squeezed Nerve Root
Cycling, computer-guided traction is applied at the level the examination identified, lowering the compressive load on the root. Dr. Bergin sets the level and the angle from your findings and re-checks the leg as the course goes on. A leg that is not changing means the plan changes, and that is agreed at the start rather than discovered later.
Chiropractic Care for a Stiff Lower Back and Pelvis
Segments that no longer move and a pelvis that has stopped sharing load keep the nerve in an irritable neighborhood. Adjusting restores that movement so decompression work holds, and it settles the guarding that makes sitting, standing and lying down equally unappealing. This portion bills insurance, verified before you start.
Neuromed Electroanalgesia for the Nerve Pain Itself
Specific electrical waveforms are delivered into the tissue to interrupt pain signalling and support local circulation. We use the Neuromed system. It runs alongside the mechanical work rather than instead of it, and it earns its place when leg pain is what costs you sleep. Self-pay protocol.

Patient experience at our Lady Lake office
Does any review at this address describe leg pain?
Lady Lake is the newer of our two offices and its review file is short.
No review at this address describes leg pain or nerve care, so none is put in front of you here as proof of either.
What is the substance behind sciatica care here?
The honest substance is this instead. Dr. Justin Bergin, DC has 22 years in practice, does the examination personally at this address, and screens the leg for weakness at every visit rather than only the first.
What happens if the leg is losing strength?
No session count is quoted before the findings exist, and a leg that is losing strength is referred the week it is found rather than kept in a course.
Sciatica in recent research
These sources are independent of this practice and none of them endorses it. They are listed so the reasoning behind the care can be checked rather than taken on trust.
- Traction for low-back pain with or without sciatica
Found little or no benefit from traction used on its own for sciatica, which is why decompression here is only ever part of a wider plan.
- Sciatica
The National Library of Medicine summary of sciatica, including the leg weakness and bladder symptoms that need same-day medical attention.

The Villages questions

My leg only gives out when I walk, and sitting on the cart fixes it. Is that still sciatica?
It is leg pain from a nerve, and the pattern you have just described is the useful part. Pain that comes on with walking or standing and eases when you sit or lean forward points at a narrowed opening in the spine rather than a disc, because bending forward opens that space slightly. It also overlaps with a circulation problem in the leg, which is a physician's territory. Telling those apart is what the first examination is for.
I am in my late seventies. Is surgery the only real answer at this stage?
Not automatically, and age on its own is not what decides it. What decides it is whether the nerve is losing function or simply hurting. A leg that is painful but strong is usually a mechanical problem with mechanical options, and that is a reasonable place to start. A foot that is starting to drop, or strength that is fading week by week, is time sensitive and belongs with a surgeon. You are told which of those you look like on day one.
Does Medicare cover sciatica care at the Lady Lake office?
Coverage varies by plan and by service and nobody here will guess at it for you. Chiropractic care has its own Medicare rules and our team verifies your benefits before the first visit. The decompression and electroanalgesia protocols generally run as self-pay. Bring your card, ask the front desk to check while you are in the building, and you will know what applies to you before you agree to anything.
Which days are you open here, and can I be seen this week?
This office treats Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Tuesday and Friday are by appointment, and this office is closed Saturday and Sunday. Those three days carry the bulk of the week here, so a course of care is planned around them. Our Lakeland office keeps a schedule of its own, set out on which days our Lakeland office is treating. Call (352) 915-7150 and ask what is open in the next few days. An irritable nerve is easier to settle early, so it is worth asking rather than assuming.
The drive to see my grandchildren takes four hours and my leg will not tolerate it. What helps?
Sitting loads the lower back more than standing does, and a long drive is unbroken sitting with vibration added. Break it every twenty to thirty minutes, get out and walk a little rather than stretching the leg in the seat, and set the seat back slightly less upright with the lumbar support actually filling the hollow. Do the drive after a treatment day rather than before one where you can.
