Medically reviewed by Dr. Justin Bergin, DC Updated September 18, 2026

Why does a curve nobody worried about start to matter now?

The curve is rarely news. Somebody mentioned it at a school screening in the nineteen sixties, or it turned up on a chest film taken for something else entirely, and for fifty years it asked nothing of you.

Then a photograph from a lunch at Lake Sumter Landing shows one shoulder riding higher than the other. A round of golf costs you the evening. Standing through a service, a line or a grandchild's recital has quietly become a calculation.

Is anything worth doing about an adult curve at seventy?

Underneath all of it sits the question people at this office actually ask, which is not whether the curve can be made straight but whether anything is worth doing at seventy. That is a fair question and it deserves a fair answer.

Dr. Justin Bergin, DC gives it after an examination, not before one, and he will tell you when the answer is an orthopedic opinion instead.

Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine, usually with rotation in it. In adults the curve is a fixed shape, and nothing offered here changes the number of degrees on your X-ray. What can change is the one-sided ache, the stiffness, the rotation you have lost and the tiredness that arrives by four in the afternoon. Care at this address is hands-on and non-surgical. The first visit is $47.

This page covers The Villages specifically. The neutral scoliosis page covers the clinical picture for both offices.

Symptoms

What The Villages patients describe when they call this office.

  • One shoulder sitting higher in every photograph
  • A waistline that looks uneven, or clothes hanging crooked
  • Ache on one side after standing through nine holes
  • A back that is tired by four and stays tired
  • Turning further one way than the other in the car
  • Tightness that always comes back to the same spot
  • A rib or back prominence when you bend forward
  • Hips that look different heights lying down
  • Height loss noticed at a routine appointment

Common causes

A curve you were told about decades ago

Idiopathic scoliosis is usually spotted in adolescence and has no identified cause. It sat quietly for fifty years and then began to hurt, which is the story patients at this office describe.

Degenerative adult scoliosis

A curve that develops later in life as discs and facet joints wear unevenly. This is the common version in a retired population, and it often turns up alongside stenosis symptoms in the legs.

Bone density loss and compression fractures

Thinning bone and wedge-shaped vertebral fractures change the shape of the column itself. Where that is part of the picture, technique and loading are chosen around it, and that changes the plan.

A functional curve from compensation

A leg-length difference, a worn hip or a guarded posture held since an old injury can produce a curve that is not structural at all. Those behave differently from a structural curve, which is why the examination separates them out first.

Neuromuscular conditions

Where muscle control around the spine is affected by an underlying neurological condition, the curve follows it. Those cases belong with the treating specialist, and any hands-on care is arranged around that.

How we treat it at our Lady Lake office

Care here is aimed at what the curve has done to you, never at the curve itself. Dr. Justin Bergin, DC finds the levels that have stopped rotating, works out which side is short and which is fatigued, and checks whether a nerve is being crowded. The plan then makes an ordinary day cost you less, and it is reviewed honestly against what you report.

Chiropractic care for the levels a curve has locked

In a curve a handful of segments do almost none of the rotation while their neighbors do far too much. Specific adjustment returns motion where it has been lost, with lower-force technique chosen freely for an older spine. It does not change the measured curve, and you will not be told otherwise.

adjusting the levels a long-standing curve has locked

Soft tissue work for a spine that is short on one side

The gripping side and the overstretched side both need attention, and they need different things. Targeted release work is usually what makes an adjustment hold. In this age group it is aimed squarely at the one-sided grip and the tiredness that arrives by four in the afternoon.

release work for the short side of an adult curve

Decompression where the curve is crowding a nerve

Degenerative curves frequently arrive with disc narrowing and a tight nerve exit on the concave side, which is why legs tire and burn after a few hundred yards. Where the examination shows that, computer-controlled traction addresses the pressure directly. Candidacy is screened first, bone density included.

What Is Realistic at Seventy

The curve stays the curve. Nothing here changes its shape. That is settled at the first visit so the rest of the conversation can be useful.

The second layer is where the pain lives. Muscles on the inside of the curve shorten and grip. Muscles on the outside lengthen and tire. Certain segments stop rotating and their neighbors do double the work.

None of that is fixed in place, and all of it answers to hands-on care and to how you load the spine the rest of the week.

What patients here ask for back. A round of golf that does not cost the whole evening. An afternoon in the garden without paying for it the next day. Standing through a service or a recital. Those are reasonable goals for an adult curve, and they are the ones worth measuring.

Who Is Treating You

Dr. Justin Bergin, DC has 22 years in practice, and he has his own history with scoliosis and long-standing pain. That history is why the practice exists in the shape it does, built to reject the rushed-appointment model.

It also decides how curves get talked about here. No promises about degrees, no warnings designed to frighten you into a plan, and a referral when a referral is the right answer.

The wider clinical picture sits on what an adult curve does to a spine over time.

Patient experience at our Lady Lake office

Is there a scoliosis review from this address?

Lady Lake is the newer of the two offices and holds only a short review file.

Nothing written about this address mentions scoliosis, so no review is presented here as proof of it.

Who does the postural examination at Lady Lake?

What can be stated plainly is that Dr. Justin Bergin, DC does the postural examination himself and is direct about what a curve will and will not do.

Scoliosis in recent research

These sources are independent of this practice and none of them endorses it. They are listed so the reasoning behind the care can be checked rather than taken on trust.

  1. 2016 SOSORT guidelines: orthopaedic and rehabilitation treatment of idiopathic scoliosis during growth

    Scoliosis and Spinal Disorders, 2018

The international society guideline on conservative scoliosis care, which sets out that observation, bracing and exercise are the options while a spine is still growing.

  2. Scoliosis in Children and Teens

National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, 2023

The federal reference confirming most scoliosis has no identified cause and that management is monitoring, bracing or surgery according to severity.

What to expect

Your first visit, step by step

Nobody at this office is asked to commit to a course before the examination has separated a structural curve from a functional one, because the two have different ceilings. Range of motion is measured at the start so progress can be compared with something rather than remembered.

  1. 01

A long first visit and any films you have

Bring old X-rays or reports if you can lay hands on them, along with your medication list and anything you have been told about bone density. A curve with fifty years of history behind it takes a while to tell properly.

  2. 02

Postural assessment and range of motion by segment

Where the rotation has gone, which side is short, how you load standing and walking, and a neurological screen of the legs. Imaging is taken where it changes the plan rather than to produce a picture.

  3. 03

A report of findings with the limits in it

You hear whether the curve is structural or functional, what is driving the pain, and what is realistically available to you. If the curve looks like it is progressing, you are pointed toward an orthopedic opinion.

  4. 04

A plan built around three treating days

The Lady Lake office treats Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, with Tuesday and Friday by appointment. The plan is built against those three days, and the home work carries the rest of the week. The Lakeland office keeps its own schedule, set out on which days the Lakeland office is open for treatment.

  5. An adjustment that is not aimed at a specific finding is just noise. We treat what the exam and the X-ray tell us to treat.

A photograph showed one shoulder higher than the other. Is that worth having looked at?

It is worth an examination, and it is one of the ways an adult curve gets noticed for the first time. Uneven shoulders can come from a structural curve, from a functional one produced by a worn hip or a leg-length difference, or from years of carrying everything on the same side. Those are three different problems with three different outlooks. Half an hour of testing separates them, and knowing which you have is worth more than another photograph.

the clinic team
Can a chiropractor straighten a curve at my age?

No. In an adult the curve is a fixed shape and no amount of hands-on care changes the degrees on your film. Bracing belongs to a growing spine and surgery belongs to severe or progressing curves. Both are decided by an orthopedic or scoliosis specialist, not here. What is genuinely on the table here is the pain, the one-sided stiffness, the rotation you have lost and the fatigue that arrives every afternoon.

the clinic team
Is it worth starting care at seventy-five?

It can be, and the reason has nothing to do with the curve. Segments that have not rotated in years can move again. Tissue that grips on the short side can let go. Tolerance for standing can improve. None of that depends on being young, and none of it changes your X-ray. What we do instead of promising is to measure your range of motion at the start, retest it at an agreed point, and tell you plainly if the plan has reached its ceiling.

the clinic team
Do you fit braces or perform surgery at the Lady Lake office?

Neither. No bracing is fitted or managed here and no surgery is performed here. A curve that is visibly changing shape, new numbness or weakness in a leg, pain that wakes you every night, or any change in bladder or bowel control needs an orthopedic or medical opinion rather than a course of care, and you will be told that at the first visit rather than after twelve of them.

the clinic team
Does Medicare cover scoliosis care at this office?

Coverage varies by plan and by service. Chiropractic care at ChiroMed bills insurance, and the front desk verifies your benefits before your first visit, Medicare and Medicare Advantage included. Soft tissue work and decompression are handled separately and quoted in advance, and you hear which part of a plan falls inside your benefit before anything is scheduled. Payment plans are available for self-pay care.

the clinic team
Which days can I be seen, and how easy is parking?

This office treats Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Tuesday and Friday are by appointment, and this office is closed Saturday and Sunday. Our Lakeland office publishes its own days, and you can check the schedule posted for the Lakeland office before you plan the drive. Parking is level, directly outside suite 404, with no garage and no steps. Call (352) 915-7150 and the front desk will find you a time on one of the three days.
